Handheld Radios
The handheld transceiver that we recommend is (and has been for twenty years) made by Vertex/Standard, the same as our vehicular units. The current model features 16 computer programmed channels (VHF or UHF), positive detent rotary channel selector, automatic squelch circuit, rechargeable nickel cadmium battery, AC charger, flexible antenna, and belt clip.
This unit has a full 5 watts of transmit power and numerous features typically found only on higher priced radios. Like the vehicular unit, it is capable of having any VHF frequency programmed into it, enabling us to combine marine and racing frequencies.
It has a special jack into which you can plug one of our high-noise headsets for motorsports pit type operation, and the circuitry is fully compatible with the dynamic noise
canceling microphones we use.
Very light (only .8 pound), yet it will run 8.2 hours on a 5-5-90 duty cycle
at the full 5 watts. Easily enough battery life for a full day of racing.

Mobile Radios
Vertex/Standard is the maker of the FM two way radios we sell. The unit most normally used for a mobile (race vehicle) application is the VHF unit, and has a 40 watt transmitter. It is fully compatible with both our Generation I and Generation II intercoms (when specifically modified by us for such use).
The radio is capable of having up to 24 channels programmed into it, (channel number is displayed on a front panel LED display), and will accept any frequency in the VHF range. This enables us to combine marine frequencies along with racing frequencies in a single unit.
The small size ( 6 1/4" x 2" x 7 1/8") and light weight (3.3 pounds) make it desirable for installation in any race vehicle. Of particular interest to those in racing applications is the fact that this radio is designed to use the dynamic noise cancelling microphone we use on our headsets and helmets. This enables the transmitted signal to be louder than with some competing units. It is powered by 12 volts DC, and if needed AC power supplies are available. It is available in both UHF and VHF versions, although VHF is most typical for point to point communications, and UHF for repeater type applications.
